The Magic Mum’s group at Saint Barbara’s Catholic Parish hosted an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on Friday to raise money for the Cancer Council.
Last year the group raised more than $100 just from people making a donation at the morning tea.
The official date for the event is Thursday May 28.
However, the mums decided to host it on the day the group could get together.
The group was formed nearly five years ago, and they meet each Friday and volunteer time to help with activities that teachers do not get time to do.
Some of the activities include contacting books, making literacy and numeracy games and coordinating fundraisers.
The group was born out of a literacy teacher’s idea for parents who wanted to be involved to help at the school but had younger children with them.
The group is held at the school’s playgroup and early learning centre so children still have somewhere to play while the mums do the activities.
There are four core women who kept the group going but other parents volunteer their time when they can.
Magic Mum Melissa Allen said they come along and do whatever is required to help.
“We just try to do stuff that teachers would normally have to do but we would prefer to do this and give the teachers back to the students,” she said.
“It is a way for new parents to meet others and for new people to join us.”
Mrs Allen said the group is a great social networking tool.
“It’s so flexible and you can come in at any time and stay for however long you can,” she said.
“The only skill that is required is to be able to talk while you’re doing something.”
Teacher Annette Wilson said: “My grandparents passed away to cancer so the morning tea is like a tribute and it helps to find a cure.”
Teacher Sally Hoffman, whose grandmother died of cancer two months ago, agreed that it was a tribute.
“It’s precious,” she said.
