Chairperson Sophie Torrisi said the group is eagerly waiting for results from a State Government study aimed at finding ways to improve regional and rural recycling and waste management.

The Zero Waste SA group allocated $1.5 million towards regional projects late last month.

Among the 15 projects funded, almost $200,000 was allocated to the state’s south-east and $40,000 towards the Riverland and Mallee.

However, Mrs Torrisi said the group have not yet heard any information regarding Roxby Downs.

The Environment Forum has been lobbying for better recycling options in Roxby Downs for more than a decade.

“The community would like to see curb-side recycling put into place,” she said.

“We just want to know, why it is so out of reach up here?”

Currently residents must manually take recycling products to Roxby Downs’ depot.

“If you, and your partner are working full time – it’s hard to get down to the depot,” she said.

“We try, but it can be difficult sometimes.

“It’s ridiculous that you only have to drive only two-and-half hours away to Port Augusta, where a three-tiered recycling system has been put in place,” Mrs Torrisi said.

“A lot of workers come to Roxby from big towns and cities and are use to having good recycling systems in place…but it seems when they get here they’re taught its okay stick everything in the bin to go into landfill,” Mrs Torrisi said.

“Its about time for a change.”
