Andamooka residents are “vehemently opposed” to an application to put 20 poker machines in the local Opal hotel.
Andamooka Progress Association president Peter Allen said the issue of poker machines has been re-emerging in the community for a number of years and locals are angered by the latest application by an Adelaide hotel consortium.
Mr Allen said the sentiment within the community was strongly against the introduction of poker machines to Andamooka.
“It’ll take as much as half a million dollars out of the community and down to Adelaide per annum.
“The only up side would be a couple of new staff employed at the hotel.
“It’s a disproportionate movement of benefits.”
The Andamooka Primary School is one of a number many local groups and individuals submitting a formal objection about the application.
Principal Angela Turner said the school feels strongly about the issue after an employee was convicted for fraud after stealing money from the school, largely for the purpose of gambling.
