Addressing doctor shortage

03 Mar, 2010 12:43 PM
A new assessment process for overseas doctors to be allowed to practise in Australia is aimed at reducing the doctor shortage in South Australia.

Enrolments opened last month by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners for the specialist pathway.

The pathway is a new assessment process for doctors who do not have current Australian medical registration but have recognised general practice qualifications from overseas.

SA/NT college faculty chairperson Professor Nigel Stocks said the pathway would help address the GP workforce shortage experienced in South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Eligible applicants are required to have a medical degree from a recognised tertiary education institution.
