Andamooka left high and dry

02 Feb, 2012 08:02 AM
Australia may be a top country to live in, but some Andamooka residents disagree.

Australia has ranked second in the standard of living index, behind Norway, in the United Nations Development Program’s 2011 Human Development Report.

Newsweek’s List of the World’s Best Countries 2010, also rated Australia highly in fourth position, with Sweden taking the top spot.

However an Andamooka resident wondered where their home town – where there is no mains water supply – was in the scheme of things as Australia waltzed into the top rankings of international publications for quality of life.

“We challenge you to go find a town in Australia of equivalent size and population to Andamooka that doesn’t have reticulated water,” said a spokesperson from the Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners’ Association (APOMA).

“Don’t think you’ll find them in Australia.”
