About 46 per cent of teenage and adult Australians have poor literacy skills, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

In promoting a literate society, it is important to ensure that more Australian children are involved in reading.

The year 2012 has been designated as the National Year of Reading for Australia and the Roxby Downs library joined a host of other libraries nationwide in launching the event on February 14.

Sharing with Valentine’s Day, February 14 was also Library Lovers Day.

“Celebrating the day, the school has invited some classes to come in at 11.20AM to listen to the reading of the National Year of Reading children’s book ‘Are We There Yet?’” Teacher-librarian Rebecca Gardner said.
