Art exhibition a local success

19/10/2007 9:40:40 AM
Never before has the Roxby Downs Art Gallery seen such a successful exhibition as the current vibrant display by South African artist, Roy Astley Fryer.

The exhibition, Africa and Beyond, has seen 19 of the 48 pieces on display sold in the first week.

Arts Development Officer Rodney Mitchell believes the exhibition's success is due to the artist's ability to connect with the Roxby Downs community on many levels.

"He's really connected with the South African community in Roxby Downs and made them feel proud about their heritage," he said.

"Being a passionate conservationalist, he's also connected with people involved in the environmental side of things as well, it really demonstrates how the arts can build bridges between communities."

The artist, Mr Fryer, said he has gained much from his Australian visit, which he hoped to share with the African community back home.

"I came out here not to sell anything but to see the different geological makeup of the area," he said.

"I have seen and learnt so much, by going out to Arid Recovery and going into the bush, I've seen a different way of looking at things, I never looked at reptiles the way I do now."

"I'm going to be making a song and dance about my Australian visit, and whatever I've learned I'll be expressing it through my art."

Mr Fryer has also promised to create a work of art especially for Arid Recovery, which will be sold as a fundraiser.

Africa and Beyond is on exhibition at the Roxby Downs Arts and Culture Centre until October 31.
