BHP Billiton representatives answered questions concerning the health of the Spencer Gulf during developments required for the Olympic Dam expansion at a meeting in Port Augusta last week.
The representatives spoke at the annual general meeting for the Port Augusta Coastal Homes Association Inc.
Manager of sustainability at BHP Billiton Steve Green received the majority of the passionate questions from “shackies” - owners of homes along the gulf - during the question and answers section, who were concerned about the environment.
Mr Green said they had undertaken extensive scientific research in the gulf in regards to the desalination plant at Port Lowley and the establishment of a loading facility at the northern end of the shacks.
“You can’t dig a pit without destroying a bit of the environment,” he told the crowd.
