Community leaders back caravan park

30 Jun, 2011 05:01 PM
Community leaders and business owners have welcomed plans to build a caravan park, hoping it will lure more tourists and provide financial backing to the community.

The idea began brewing between Roxby Downs businessman Chad Owen and the Andamooka Progress Association (APOMA) two years ago.

Mr Owen said the idea emerged when a local accommodation shortage became evident, and he recognised the lack of accommodation for tourists in Andamooka.

The concept plans have now been drawn up, the Department of Natural Resources has approved the venture and just a final signature from the state government is required to commence the construction of the park.

The park is planned to accommodate both tourists and the overflow of workers from Roxby Downs.

It will contain seven two-room villas, 55 one-bedroom units, powered camping and caravan sites, a play area, camp kitchen, and dump and wash point.

APOMA chairperson Peter Allen said the caravan park development was an important development for the town.

“It will provide a sustainable and substantial income for the community into the future.”
