From heatwave to downpours

25 Nov, 2009 12:12 PM
Roxby emerged from a record breaking heat wave only to be belted with rainfall causing the cancellation of local sports.

The Roxby Downs Sporting Car Club was one victim, having to move its final meeting to Sunday.

Up until 9am Tuesday, Andamooka recorded 35mm and Woomera recorded 45mm of rain in the previous week.

The rain came as a welcome relief to locals struggling through power outages resulting form air-conditioner usage.

Roxby saw 14 consecutive days reach over 35 degrees from November 7 to 20, equalling the previous November record set in 2003.

During the sweltering heat wave eight consecutive days were recorded over 40C, thrashing the previous record of five days set in 2006.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Paul Lainio said the unusually hot November heatwave was a “real standout event for November, so I would expect it (the record) to stand”.

“Usually in November cold fronts move through so after two or three days of hot weather a cold front provides relief.”

As result of the heat a catastrophic fire danger warning was issued for South Australia’s Northwest Pastoral district, which included Roxby Downs, Andamooka, and Woomera.
