About 2100 people made it through the gates at the Roxby Downs Racing Club on Saturday to soak up all the colour and action on and off the field for the club’s single racing event.
Held every second Saturday of August, the Roxby meeting boasts being the most remote Outback meeting in the state, this year celebrating its 16th anniversary.
Six races had the crowds entertained across the day, keeping the bookmakers busy.
While horses from across the state made it onto the iconic dirt track in hope to claim the Roxby Cup, it was Granzig that stormed down the 1800 metre stretch to claim this year’s One Steel Outback Roxby Downs Cup in a clear win.
Under the guidance of apprentice jockey Jess Greacen, the nine-year-old chestnut gelding claimed her 11th career win, as she outran the cup favourites Lotto Blues, who placed second, and New Zealand horse Pelekunu Valley who rolled in fourth. Morphettville-trained horse Da Thong placed third in the cup.
It was a second Roxby Downs Cup win for Strathalbyn-trainer Mick Whittle, who had a good day on the track, racing three horses in the cup and placing third in two other races with Kistadan and Regal Journey.
