Three teams have already registered for this years Roxby Relay for Life.
Relay committee members Coral Barrett and Pam Evans promoted registrations last market day.
A “Grease” themed team signed up and the child-care centre registered a team called “Let’s Get Physical”.
“They are all now extremely busy and excited getting their costumes and tent themes together,” committee secretary Carmel Paxton said.
The first Roxby Relay for Life raised a record amount of money but Mrs Paxton said the Cancer Council is not “out to beat any amounts”.
“Cancer Council SA and the committee held a meeting where it was decided this year’s event is not about who can raise the highest amount,” she said.
“It is not feasible in this economic climate. What we want is a community event that is a fun place to come, join in and just unite the town as one.
“So get a band of 10 friends together, register a team, raise some money and just come along and have some fun.”
The committee sent out a call for more volunteers through the Roxby Downs Sun in November last year.
“The team was short staffed, but thankfully a couple of people within the community stepped up to help us out,” Mrs Paxton said.
Mrs Paxton said there were many committee members but one area in need of a volunteer was “taking on the sponsorship package”.
Relay for Life is a major fundraising event, held by the Cancer Council of South Australia.
It starts with a “survivors and carers” walk at 2pm on Saturday October 16.
“If you would like to walk this extremely emotional lap of the oval, then please phone Vicky Hatty on 0409 254 016.
“This walk really brings together the whole bond that survivors and carers have. Many close friendships started on this walk and still continue today.”
The relay around the oval goes until 9am the following morning. Each team has 10-15 members and one of those must have their baton on the oval at all times.
It is recommended each team have a running sheet designating walking times.
If you would like to volunteer or have any queries contact any committee member or Kate on 0418 820 249, Coral on 0439 086 929 or Carmel on 0417 855 064.
To register a team nominate a team captain who registers online at www.relayforlife.org.au.
There are nine different awards given out at the event in categories such as best theme, best team banner, highest fundraiser and Miss Relay for Life/Miss Outrageous/Miss Beachwear (including a man from each team dressed up like a woman).
