The Andamooka Opal Girl Guides may have to shut down if desperately needed funds are not secured.
Unit leader Kristi “Sturt Pea” Jackson said the unit may have to be shut down because “the funds have run out”.
“Initially we need funding to ensure the continuation of the bus service we supply to collect the 11 guides from Roxby Downs and bring them to guides at Andamooka which costs us $60 per week,” she said.
“Also up until now we have had the use of the community hall for free but as of next year we will be getting charged to utilise it due to the new air-conditioning system that has recently been installed.
“We need around $2600 per year to run the bus and we are not sure how much we are going to be charged for the use of the hall.
“We got a grant this year for the bus from Healthy Communities in Roxby Downs this organisation no longer exists and the money has run out.”
Mrs Jackson said the unit applied for a small grant from the Outback Areas Community Development Trust (OACDT) but were unsuccessful because it was given to another group and only one could be given per town.
Mrs Jackson is urging local businesses to help save the “non profit community organisation”.
“There are around 16 girls and four leaders who will be very disappointed if this unit cannot continue to run.”
