Moving forward in Andamooka

19 Jan, 2012 10:20 AM
In December 2011 the standing committee on regional Australia visited Andamooka to assess the impacts of the Olympic Dam expansion.

The seven-strong committee met with Peter Allen, Rob Hancock, and Cass Rowett of APOMA to discuss among other issues, the fly in, fly out (FIFO) and drive in, drive out (DIDO) practices; the increase in caravans and buses on single properties; increased use of the rubbish dump; building approvals for single men’s quarters; and damage to the airstrip.

APOMA chairperson Peter Allen said the group was gobsmacked that state government had allowed Andamooka to “slip through the cracks”.

“They were stunned,” Mr Allen said.

Tony Windsor, who chaired the committee, mentioned that it should not be difficult for federal government to send Andamooka a million or two in terms of annual financial funding to improve much needed infrastructural development.
