The South Australian Arid Lands (SAAL) has the largest percentage of intact ecosystems and natural biodiversity in all of South Australia.
In order to establish a structure for ecologically sustainable development of the State’s natural resources, the Natural Resources Manage-ment Act 2004 (the NRM Act) was passed.
The Act empowered the NRM Board to carry out statutory responsibilities over a long-term business plan of ten 10-year targets.
These targets were based on knowledge that the large extent of SAAL is used for sheep and cattle grazing that rely on native vegetation for feed; and that water is a critical resource supporting biodiversity, communities, and industries.
