 Ramsey holds onto Grey

Ramsey holds onto Grey

26 Aug, 2010 11:34 AM
Liberal MP Rowan Ramsey has retained the seat of Grey after claiming more than half of the primary votes at Saturday’s federal election.

While a 9.39 per cent swing against the party at the 2007 election left the Liberals holding onto the seat by only 4.43 per cent, Mr Ramsey helped secure a 6.1 per cent swing against Labor, putting the seat safely back into Liberal hands.

It will be Mr Ramsey’s second term in parliament after succeeding the seat from Liberal stalwart Barry Wakelin in 2007. While the future of Australia’s leadership still remains unclear - as the country faces a hung parliament – the decision in Grey was far more decisive.

After gaining more than 17,000 more votes than Labor candidate Tauto Sansbury, Mr Ramsey emerged as the clear winner early on in the night.

It was the end of a busy day for Mr Ramsey, who spent the day travelling across the electorate, from Ardrossan to Whyalla, as he made his way across the seat; the third largest in the country.

Mr Ramsey claimed 55.2 per cent of the first preferences, which translated to 60.4 per cent of votes on a two-party preferred basis.

“I trust at least a portion of the swing is recognition of a lot hard work over the last three years and I am humbled by the broad support,” Mr Ramsey said in celebrating the win.

He said the result proved people in the Grey electorate were unhappy with Labor policies.

Mr Ramsey was hopeful that Coalition would form government with the support of the independents.

“The Coalition represents far more of regional Australia than the Labor Party and I believe the regionally based independents will see they have far more in common with the Coalition.”

The Greens Andrew Melville-Smith secured a 3.3 per cent swing in their favour with 5540 votes, while Sylvia Holland managed to gain 4008 votes for the Family First party.
