Restoring the outback

27 Jan, 2012 10:05 AM
BHP Billiton has donated Arid Recovery Roxby Downs 123 square kilometres of fenced reserve near the town.

Restoring the South Australian outback means both conservation and control of wildlife.

While conservation aims to prevent animals from going extinct, control ensures that communities and businesses are safe from the negative effects of wildlife over-breeding, especially feral animals such as rabbits, cats, and foxes.

Out of this land mass, feral animals have been eradicated from a total of 60 square kilometres and this has provided an area of complete protection into which locally extinct mammals have been reintroduced.
