The bi-annual Garry Cotton memorial poker motorbike run will be held on March 20 and local entrant Graeme “Bones” Bennie is encouraging anyone interested in motorbikes to participate.
Jon “Frommy” Fromm organises the one-day bike run in honour of his and Mr Bennie’s good mate and motorbike enthusiast, Garry Cotton, who died in April, 2000.
All proceeds go to the Royal Flying Doctor’s Service and last time the ride raised more than $1400.
There are five stops on the run where riders are dealt a card. At the end the person with the best five-card poker hand wins a prize.
Mr Bennie said anyone with a motorbike was welcome to come along.
“Last time we had a great bunch of people from all different walks of life and we had an absolute ball,” Mr Bennie said.
“You don’t need to know anybody because by the end you’re all good mates.
“It’s a great way of mixing with people who share the same interests and love of bikes, have a good time, and raise money for a good cause at the same time.”
Riders will leave Roxby a day early on March 19 to make it to Poochera, the starting point for the ride.
They will leave Poochera at 9.45am on March 20 and head to the second stop at Wirrulla, followed by the third stop at Ceduna to have lunch.
Streaky Bay is the fourth stop and riders will finish at Minnipa for a barbecue tea and prizes.
There is a small entry fee and accommodation is available at the Minnipa Hotel/Motel or room for swags at the Minnipa Football Club.
It will be the ninth poker run held in Garry Cotton’s honour but Mr Bennie said he wanted to raise as much awareness and get as many riders from Roxby to participate as possible.
“All you need is a swag, clothes, and your bike and you’re set.”
Mr Bennie will be riding his 2008 Dyna Street Bob Harley Davidson.
