Roxby Downs will be centre stage when it hosts the Far North Advantage SA Regional Awards in October.
The town will have the chance to show off its sparkling facilities at the Dunes Café and auditorium.
And with a number of local individuals and businesses up for awards, the outstanding contributions of residents will also be in the spotlight.
Shane Hough is one familiar face up for a regional award. He has been nominated in the youth category.
After moving up from Adelaide earlier this year, Mr Hough has spent some action-packed months reviving the youth centre, coordinating the Youth Advisory Committee, developing a youth leadership program and improving the relationship between young people and police.
“In the first six months of the re-opening of the youth centre, the daily visitor average has risen from five to 18 people per opening, and along with youth events, there has been over 1150 youths engaged,” Mr Hough said.
“In a short period of time I have been able to turn around the public’s perception of youth by reaching out to the locals and re-igniting the passion and belief in what the youth of Roxby Downs can achieve.”
Mr Hough sees himself as a role model in the community because he has had to learn new skills and venture out of his comfort zone.
“Originally not having any direction in life and having troubles throughout my teenage years, I didn’t start my studies in social work until I was 21-years-old,” he said.
“If someone told me five years ago that I would be where I am today, I would have definitely laughed and that is the message I try to pass onto the youth.”
Getting the Youth Advisory Committee up and running Mr Hough said was his best achievement so far.
He said he now gets kids constantly asking him, “When is the next meeting ... I have an idea”.
“They’re just finding that their voice can be heard, in the past I think they thought their views and stuff didn’t get heard,” he said.
“I don’t see as many kids wandering the streets as I did when I first arrived.”
Mr Hough’s supervisor and leisure centre operations manager, Michael Esposito, said he was hopeful Mr Hough would win the award – to add to the cabinet of pears which has been bestowed on Roxby Downs’ community organisations in past years.
He said the town was really excited to be hosting the event.
“It’s the first time the awards are going to be held in Roxby so we’re keen to impress.”
The ceremony will be held on Friday, October 22. Advantage SA chief executive officer Nikki Seymour-Smith is encouraging locals to attend the event.
“We’ve seen some remarkable entries from individuals, groups and businesses from the Far North region and look forward to uncovering some truly inspirational stories amongst them.”
