Roxby Downs was widely recognised as a leader in the region at the 2009 SA Great Far North Regional Awards on Monday night, taking away three awards at a ceremony in Port Augusta.
Andamooka teenager Tim West, Outback Smart and 105.5 RoxFM Community Radio each received one of the coveted SA Great ‘pear’ awards for their work in the Far North region.
Outback Smart was awarded a Department for Trade and Economic Development Innovation Award, Tim West was named Adelaide Showground Youth Award winner and 105.5 RoxFM won the Sustainability Award.
Labelled a positive role model for his peers, Tim was awarded for his extensive community and school involvement.
He has represented the State Emergency Service at an ANZAC vidual in Adelaide and a presentation to the Governor General, represented Roxby Downs Area School during a visit by Premier Mike Rann recently, volunteers as a Country Fire Service cadet and actively participates in his School Representative Council and School Governing Council.
“I think I get more out of it than I put in,” the former school captain said in his acceptance speech.
In the first program of its kind, the self-sustaining volunteer-run Outback Smart program was recognised for its commitment to providing innovative community education regarding energy consumption
RoxFM was awarded for its commitment to local recycling and sustainability initiatives, including for its 2008 weekly environment show, ‘Eco-Hour’.
SA Great chairman, Nigel McBride, said the awards represented a promising future for Roxby Downs and the wider region.
“The awards play a key role in making the wider South Australian community aware of the many achievements that occur in our regions every day,” he said.
