The Roxby Downs Scout Group raised more than $6000 for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal recently by holding a bottle drive fundraiser.
With help from over 35 youth members, parents, leaders and committee members, the scouts collected $2655 in recyclables and other cash donations for the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal.
BHP Billiton also matched dollar for dollar, bringing the total amount to $6574.
Chairperson Glen Michels said the bottle drive was a “huge success”.
“Along with the rest of the nation, we were saddened to hear of the devastation caused by the Victorian Bushfires,” he said.
“We, as a group, called a meeting with both leaders and the parent committee, to come up with a way in which we could help alleviate some of the pain caused.”
Mr Michels said the group kick-started the fundraiser with a group donation of $100.
“After letterboxing leaflets, TV advertising, radio and press coverage, the community backed us 100 per cent with streets lined with their recyclables,” he said.
“The Roxby Downs Scout Group wishes to kindly thank all people who donated bottles and cans and their time and assistance in ensuring the success of this fundraiser.
“Our youth members should be proud of themselves for their ‘caring and sharing’ and ‘putting others first’ attributes for what we hope, will help others regain strength.”
