The Roxby Scouts’ can and bottle collection drive was a big success on Saturday with an estimated $1400 to $1700 raised.
The Scouts hold four bottle-drives a year to coincide with school terms.
Group leader, Scott Martin, or Baloo, as he is known in the Scouts, said about 15 children and eight parents turned up to help.
Mr Martin said volunteer numbers were down from the previous bottle drive but he was happy with the response from the community.
“We had a really good day, every bottle drive is a success,” he said.
In the past Scouts would door knock and ask residents for can and bottle donations, this time they delivered flyers around town a week in advance asking residents to leave donations at the edge of their property.
The scouts split into four groups at 9am and spent more than four hours picking up the bottles.
Mr Martin said it was encouraging to see a lot more people starting to leave donations outside for collection.
The money raised will go towards sporting and camping equipment, group projects, and a new scout hall.
“We are hoping to get some activity shirts for the kids so they don’t have to wear uniforms for everything like the bottle drives,” he said.
Mr Martin said he thinks South Australia’s new 10c refund on drink bottles has affected the bottle drives because even though the Scouts receive more funds, more people are recycling their own.
Mr Martin said he is grateful to the bottle yard for its support and the volunteers who helped make the day a success.
