Women only event

03 Mar, 2010 12:42 PM
Ladies leave the men at home because a women only, pre-loved fashion market has hit Roxby Downs.

It is the final event from the leisure centre’s “Focus on Local Women” program.

The pre-loved fashion market will be held on Saturday, March 27 at the auditorium to give Roxby, Andamooka, and Woomera women the chance to enjoy a night out, recycle excess clothing and accessories and make money at the same time.

Committee member, Kat Wallis, said the market aimed to continue the International Women’s Day theme: “Celebrating the strength, courage and diversity of all women.”

Women can sell goods at their chosen price and keep all the money made.

To sell items you must complete a registration form, available at the information centre, and return it along with your items by March 19. The committee will check, tag and display them in the auditorium ready for sale.

Clothing must be clean, ironed, and of good quality and sellers must provide their own coat hangers.

Sales will be in cash only and recorded at the checkout by approved volunteers and committee members.

For $18 you get a drink on arrival and nibbles with part proceeds going to the Roxby Downs Health Services Auxiliary, which will use it for women-focused fundraising.

Ms Wallis said the markets aimed to bring women “out of the house to have fun”.

“It is hoped the market will help the leisure centre to create a women’s network in the area for the many local women who otherwise have little contact with the wider community due to work, family, or out of town commitments,” she said.

“It will be an opportunity for local women to sell and buy good quality clothes and accessories, while enjoying a fashion ‘ideas’ parade, talking to friends and having fun in an all female environment.

“Hopefully this is the first of many events like this, if it is successful there are many more types of markets that could be run, like pre-loved toys and pre-loved kids clothes.”

The idea came from a group of friends who started chatting about how nice the idea would be at their regular coffee catch up.

With Bernie Kinnaird’s help from the leisure centre, the idea soon came to life and the group turned to a committee, and the pre-loved fashion market was born. The committee are looking for volunteers to model some of the clothes in the “ideas” parade.

“We need models in all shapes, sizes, and age groups.”

The event will run from 7pm-10pm. For more information or if you are interested in volunteering contact Bernie Kinnaird at the information centre.
