About 250 spectators raced to Red Dunes raceway Friday night to cheer on the Desert Dirt Go Kart Club’s twilight race meeting.
Drivers as young as seven competed throughout the night and club secretary Chelsa Robertson said the atmosphere was “amazing”.
“The atmosphere was really exciting, even though it was quite hot, heaps of people sat in groups along the fence line and lots of people backed their cars down to sit on, it was a really good summer fun atmosphere.”
There are four different race categories depending on kart size and power.
Wild Bunch is the highest category for higher-powered karts.
Just two drivers entered this and after one pulled out, Hayden Borlaise was declared winner by default.
The Rookies category are for first year drivers, this class got participation trophies.
“The trophies keep them inspired, and gets them to be enthusiastic about what they are doing.”
Ms Robertson said membership numbers were up from last year.
“The numbers are fantastic, we are always excited to get new club members, they bring another dimension to the club.
“We have fantastic volunteers. If we didn’t have these volunteers we wouldn’t be able to run.”
Ms Robertson gave a special thanks to MC Jack McGuire for his efforts on the night. The club’s next meeting will be held on Friday, March 12 for another twilight race night from 7.30pm.
