The wedgies have returned home from the Miners Cup cup-less after a 77-point loss to Broken Hill on Saturday.
Twenty-three of the best players from Woomera and Districts Football League ventured to Adelaide to steal their third consecutive cup, played as a curtain raiser to the Port Adelaide versus Hawthorne match at AAMI stadium.
Geelong football legend Gary Hocking gave the teams a speech Friday night when the soon-to-be competitors united to enjoy a meal together before the battle.
However it was all business the next morning.
With perfect weather and flawless ground conditions, both teams were evenly contested and the Wedgies took an early lead in the first quarter, but Broken Hill stole it back with a nine-point lead at the half time break.
Broken Hill blew the game open in the third quarter dominating the field to creep away with a whopping 19 goal, 14 behind, 128-point game with the Wedgies trailing behind at seven goals, nine behinds, 51 points.
Broken Hill were able to find far more gaps and keep the ball in their square more than they ever had in the cup’s three-year history.
Broken Hill commanded the game and their opponents, who despite playing their hearts out, were simply outdone on the day.
Assistant team manager Graham Warren told the Roxby Downs Sun losing was always a possibility, but the margin of the loss was what surprised him.
“At end of day, Broken Hill were just too good,” he said.
“We couldn’t have done anything better, they were just all over ground and a bit stronger than us.
“We started to lose it in the third quarter, they just took control and our boys were chasing guernseys for the rest of day … they got beaten by a better team at the end of the day.”
He said he knew Broken Hill had the win 10 minutes into the last quarter.
However Warren said the boys did their sponsors proud, and although their efforts weren’t reflected on the scoreboard, they played hard with good spirit and good sportsmanship.
“They were very good on and off the field, I take my hat off to them … afterwards they shook the opposition’s hands and had a few beers and that’s what country footy is all about.
“We would like to once again thank our sponsors for getting the boys down there, they really did the sponsors proud and conducted themselves well.”
Best players for Wedgies: Brad Cooper, Luke Scobie, Michael Tuthill, Dion McEvoy and Jarrod Pyke.
