This weekend heralds the first week of football finals for the Woomera and Districts Football League season.
The first semi final will see the top two teams Olympic Dam and Roxby Districts play off for an instant spot in this year’s September 4 final.
While the teams sit at the top of the ladder, OD on 22 points and Roxby on 18, only one will get a free ticket into the grand final.
Woomera and Districts Football League president Barry Mitchell said it was set to be a tight match.
“It’ll be a close one, but I think it will come down to a hard fight.
“At the end of the day though, I think the readiness and the power of the Olympic Dam Football Club will overcome Roxby Districts,” he assumed.
“They definitely have a psychological edge I would say.”
Meanwhile five hours north, Coober Pedy Football Club will simultaneously host what will be a historic match.
It will be the first time the club has hosted a finals match on home ground in the league’s history.
“It will be the first time in their involvement with the league, about seven years, that a finals match will be played at their home ground,” Mitchell said.
The club will take on Andamooka, with the winner taking on the runners-up from the Olympic Dam - Roxby Districts clash.
After a disappointing season Hornridge was knocked out of the competition in the last round.
They found themselves at the bottom of the ladder on a mere four points this season.
League president Mitchell said some key departures this season saw them find themselves with the wooden spoon.
Critical losses from the team this year included Tyron Price, Damian Smith, Joel Coulthard to West Augusta and Adam Heuske to Booleroo Melrose Wilmington (BMW), which contributed to their poor form.
“They have some exceptional young players gaining some ground and I can see great things for them next year.”
Mitchell said the finals were shaping up to end what had been a good season this year in both the league and junior teams.
“We’ve had some new young players come into the system, and do great things on the field.
“We also reintroduced night games back to Woomera which has proved very successful.
“We’ve also had solid support from the West Adelaide Football Club who have provided ongoing support to the teams and players.”
