Miners have added another match to their hot streak of wins, defeating Roxby Pleisure in the 10th round of the season on Sunday.
In what was one of the most exciting matches of the season to date, Miners and Pleisure fought it out in five gruelling innings, but in the end the extra experience from Miners veterans and their talented fill-ins helped the reds come away with a 19-13 win over the younger but up-and-coming star players of Roxby Pleisure.
Miners won the toss and sent Pleisure to the field for the first innings.
First batter up Jess Schuller took to the plate and took advantage of an overthrow to sprint to second.
Karen Gillam followed suit but was tagged out moments before touching first plate.
Tori Robertson led a record hot streak becoming the first of the next six batters to make it home in the first innings.
Home runs from special guest player Nathan Schuller and Miners big hitter Jamie Gillam, who scored another homerun in the third, helped bring the loaded plates home.
At first changeover Pleisure knew some sharp tactics and consistent batting were needed to answer the seven runs on the Miners’ score card.
Rob Kinnaird was first up at the batters plate, and was the only hitter in the first innings to get home after three of the first five batters got out.
However, Pleisure brought their A-game to the field for the second innings, promptly sending the first three Miners batters back to the bench they came from in what was the shortest innings of the match.
Some surprising fielding from Pleisure’s Ben Kennedy and newcomers Paul and Lisa Polujnikoff, terrific outfield slaughtering from Geoff Haugum and Kon Kiparoglou’s first base slices helped send Miners packing.
With zero runs added to the Miners run count, the next innings presented the perfect chance for Pleisure to steal back the lead.
Pleisure took advantage of some sloppy pitching from Jessica Schuller, which made the job of catcher and self proclaimed “legend” Scott Brown more difficult than it should have been, in the second and third innings and added another six runs to their count, bringing their total to seven at the end of the third.
Some unlucky tagging on inexperienced newer players ended the run count sooner than expected.
However, Miners sealed the deal in the third bringing their count to 11.
Pleisure chased runs hard but couldn’t quite catch up. However they came extremely close in the fourth thanks to a jaw-dropping five-run streak compliments of Rob Kinnaird, Lisa Polujnikoff, Matthew Kinnaird, Geoff Haugum and Ben Kennedy, but couldn’t quite seal the gap by the end of the match.
The strong infield team in Karen Gillam at short-stop, Jamie Gillam on first, Adrian Harris on second, and Dave Barnes on third, and the consistent outfield work from Brodie McPhail, Nathan Schuller, and Tori Robertson, helped keep Pleisure runners at bay and seal the win for Miners.
A special mention to Jamie and Karen Gillam, who played their tearful last match on Sunday before they move away. Miners are hoping to drag them back for finals.
