Quest for back to back victory

10 Feb, 2010 02:40 PM
Roxby Districts Cricket Association’s best players will head to Adelaide next week to attempt back-to-back victory at the South Australian Country Championships.

It will not be easy because 18 teams from all over the State will enter the carnival hungry for the Chris Hartwig Shield.

Each team will play five games and the one with the most points at the end of the week wins the championship.

The same man who captained last year’s team to victory, Ryan Selkirk, will lead again this year.

“We have a great chance of going back to back and bringing home some more silverware,” he said.

Last year the team, better known as “the wedgies”, defeated Rocky River, Barossa, Light, and Penola to take the shield.

“Last year we really didn’t know what to expect, just a bunch of guys going down to play a bit of cricket, but we knew we had the talent to match it with anyone.

“About mid-week we realised that we were a chance to win, we won all five games and was the only team undefeated.”

Roxby will face Penola, Stanbury, Berri, Bute and Weetulta.

“Penola will probably be one of our harder teams that we’ll play, they’ve got some good cricketers down the South East and they have a pretty good history at the championships having won it 10 times which is the most by any team in the 75-year competition.”

However this does not scare the team.

“We’ve got some great cricketers up here with good experience at a higher level.

“There is great professionalism within the group, we are going there to win.”

Keen interest made team selection harder, but Mr Selkirk said this was a positive thing.

The team is grateful to its sponsors for their support.

“We didn’t have to raise any funds due to our great sponsors and their generosity, BHP Billiton, York, Heading Contractors, and Bianco and 300 K enterprises.

“It would be great if anyone is around Adelaide during the week to come out

and see some good cricket and show their support for Roxby Districts Cricket Association.”
