The Roxby Downs Swim Club ventured to the Port Pirie swim carnival on Saturday cleaning up with several medals and doing the town proud.
Fourteen swimmers competed in perfect conditions at Port Pirie’s recently built $1 million pool.
Senior head coach Phillipa Weltner said the club performed exceptionally well and the male competitor’s performances really stood out.
Billy Weltner won eight medals, Matthew Lowe won six, Will Abbott won four, and Julia Weltner won three.
Roxby’s relay teams came second and third in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay.
Roxby A team consisted of Will Abbott, Billy Weltner, Julia Weltner, and Matthew Lowe and Roxby B team consisted of four siblings Steph Bastian, Aishah Bastian, Brianna Bastian and Hayley Gregory.
The youngest competitors, Annalise Abbott, 5, and Harrison Abbott took part in their first 100m freestyle event and achieved similar times to those three years older.
“There was a standing ovation from SwimmingSA officials when they completed the swim,” Mrs Weltner said.
“We were very proud of them.”
Mrs Weltner said the 50m pool gave competitors the chance to reach their real potential.
“The brand new Port Pirie pool was a fantastic pool and it looked great,” she said.
“And now that the pool is actually 50 metres long and not a bit extra the kids performed some great personal bests.
“Port Pirie did a fantastic job hosting this carnival, it was a great day and great venue.”
More than 1000 swims were completed on the day.
“A big thank you to Wendy Lowe for helping out in the recorders tent all day - the Port Pirie club were very thankful of her support and assistance. Also thank you to our parents who assisted with time keeping - and with assisting the swimmers out on the day.”
