Wedgies win

24 Feb, 2010 03:07 PM
Roxby Districts Cricket Association a stole back-to-back victory at the South Australian Country Championships on Friday, making them

They are now the only undefeated team in the competition for two straight years.

The team, better known as “the wedgies”, competed in Adelaide playing five games over five days from a draw of 18 teams.

The first and much anticipated match against rival team from last year Penola, who team captain Ryan Selkirk described as Roxby’s biggest threat for the championship, saw Roxby secure a nail biting win by a mere six runs.

Since then the team knew it was a good chance for victory. Four more consecutive wins against Stansbury, Bute, Berri and Weetulta saw the team win the championship by eight points, the equivalent to two “first innings” wins.

Team captain for the second year, Ryan Selkirk, said the team was “stoked” with the result.

“All of us are stoked, we’ve worked pretty hard and it’s good to give something back to everyone that has helped out, president Alan Woolford, team manager Graham Warren, our finance operator Jason Schell, and all our sponsors,” he said.

“We played good positive cricket and it was a good reward for the effort we put in.

“Without losing a game is a pretty big feat but to win two outright was unreal, that means we bowled the other team out twice for under our team score (when we were) only batting once.”

The final match against Roxby’s next biggest threat, Weetulta, was icing on the cake given the team had already secured enough points for victory.

“Although we had trophy in our hands we wanted to make it five straight wins and also give a good send off to some of the guys that won’t play next year due to retirement and other commitments.”

Roxby batted first and made a lightning 209 runs from 40 overs. Batting highlights were Ryan Selkirk leading the way with 54 runs, Darren Leonard made 48, Jason Carroll 32, and Craig Nichols 30.

Jason Carroll’s 24 runs off one over was a real stand out attack.

Then it was Roxby’s turn to bowl and like all week the bowling was a stand out.

Roxby bowled them out for 129. Adrian Boulton and Charl Botes both took three wickets and Jason Carroll and Toby Ferguson both chipped in with some very important wickets.

Conditions were hot all week but Selkirk said the team was used to hot weather in Roxby.

“Just doing that for five days in a row drained us out a bit.”

Selkirk said the team would return to the championships next year in search for the hat trick.

“Yeah we’ll be there again next year, we’ve got a few retirees so there’ll be a few spots up for grabs next year; looking forward to going three in a row.

“Thanks to all the support from our sponsors, well done to the guys that went down to Adelaide and represented Roxby Downs Cricket, hopefully this generates more interest for cricket in Roxby Downs and the country carnival next year.”

Selkirk said the team had no injuries but “just a lot of sore guys”.
